CATEC Summer Camp
A Huge Success

CATEC's summer camp program was a huge success this year!  This summer we offered camps in Culinary Arts (2 sessions), Cosmetology, Architecture and Construction (3 sessions), Music Technology and Health and Medical Science. One-hundred and six students participated.  The success of the camp is due to the instructors, as well as all the businesses and individuals that donated their time in order to teach the students about their line of work.  Many businesses also allowed the students to visit their workplace.  We give our heartfelt thanks to the following individuals/businesses, without whom camp would not have been the same:

Thinking Maps at CATEC Gets Exposure

One of the major initiatives for CATEC this past year (and for the future) centers on the use of Thinking Maps.  While seen to some in education as another graphic organizer, Thinking Maps are far more involved than organizers of thought.  They are also great tools for students in learning how to remember, conceptualize and process new information.  CATEC just recieved praise from the Thinking Maps Coordinators for our work this year.  Click HERE to read the article.

Carpentry Program Receives State Award for Hinge House Project- At the Environmental Virginia Conference 4/2/08, The GAINES Group, in partnership with CATEC, was recognized for a Governor's Environmental Excellence Award. The "Hinge House" received a Gold Award Recognition as part of the Environmental Project Partnership category. The Hinge House is the first-ever LEED Registered house in the country that is built by high school students.  Virginia Legislature recognized CATEC for its demonstrated commitment to the stewardship of Virginia's natural Resources through the Hinge House Project.

The house has received additional recognition in recent publications including the Virginia Business Magazine and Angie's List.  Click on the pictures below to read the articles.
