Hinge House Receives Award

At the Environmental Virginia Conference 4/2/08, The GAINES Group, in partnership with CATEC, was recognized for a Governor's Environmental Excellence Award. The "Hinge House" received a Gold Award Recognition as part of the Environmental Project Partnership category. The Hinge House is the first-ever LEED Registered house in the country that is built by high school students. Virginia Legislature recognized CATEC for its demonstrated commitment to the stewardship of Virginia's natural Resources through the Hinge House Project.

LEED Registered House Gets Regional & National Coverage

Our new LEED registered house built by Jason Ritter's carpentry class at CATEC received national coverage when the local story covered by the Daily Progress http://www.dailyprogress.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=CDP%2FMGArticle%2FCDP_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1173353987534&path=!news was picked up by the AP. WTOP, Newsvirginian, greenbuilding today, acegreen, timesnews.net, and the examiner were just a few of the publications that picked up the story.

This is the first house in the country to achieve the status of LEED registration with high school students constructing the house.

Building Green and Social Networking

If you have read any of our blogs (see Innovative Technology in Education) you know that we are looking to find ways to incorporate social networking into the secondary education to enhance engagement and student learning through a collaborative forum.

Our Residential Construction Program recently achieved a milestone. Our school (CATEC) became the first in the nation to have a house REGISTERED under the LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) guidelines of USGBC (United States Green Building Council)by High School students.

Under the watchful eye of our Carpentry instructor, Jason Ritter, our students are building a house with the assistance of Charles Hendrix of the Gaines Architectural Group in Charlottesville and utilizing energy efficient practices and materials. Now we want the world to know. How would you suggest that we use social networking to help get the word out of our accomplishments and to get students to help contribute to the discussion? Please post your comments.

What Does It Mean to Be Green?

The Buzz word these days is about being "Green." What was once a little known topic has now burst into mainstream society with marketers and advertisers jumping on the bandwagon. So how does a school, such as CATEC, try to reduce its carbon footprint and help educate students about being environmentally friendly?

Well, one group that has taken this initiative by storm is our Carpentry Program. Each year our high school students construct a modular home that is sold each year in the spring. Our 2006/07 house followed the US Green Building Council's LEED guidelines for construction. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and its purpose is to use sustainable and environmentally favorable practices and materials during the construction process. While our house did not gain official LEED certification it did shed a whole new light for our students on how to use "best practices" to go Green.

CATEC is currently in the design phases on construction this year's house (2007/08) with the hope of gaining official LEED certification as the first to be built by high school students in the country. We need great partnerships in our community to make this happen but will not fail based on desire and perseverance.

In the end, whether the house built by our students is certified or not, we have made a lasting impression on a future generation of consumers and less of an impression with our carbon footprint.
